1st International Conference

KFS’s 1st International Annual Conference was held at Hanyang University, Erica Campus, Ansan, Korea, February 26 -28, 2018. It was a successful conference with total attendees of 82. There were 12 invited speakers including Professor Wallace Leung (Hong Kong), Professor Kuo-Lun Tung (Taiwan), CEO Zhili Song (China), Professor Chikao Kanaoka (Japan), Professor Peter P Tsai (USA), Professor Joo-Hong Choi (Korea), CEO Kevin Choe, PhD (Korea), Dr. Wenping Li (USA), VP Martin Klein (Germany), Professor Eunkyong Shim (USA), Professor Yong Sik Ok (Korea), Dr. Yeong-Og Choi and CTO Kyung-Ju Choi, Chair of KFS (USA). The theme was “Shape Up the Future with Filtration and Separation – Clean Environment”. Well prepared 22 poster presentations were the highlight of the conference. 5 exhibitors; ABC Trading, Doublewin, ART Plus, APM Engineering and Parkor Korea, added the value of the conference. There were 21 students taking two full day basic short courses; Air and Liquid taught by 9 instructors including Prof. Suk-Ho Kang, Dr. Wenping Li, Dr. Jong-Kil Kim, Prof. Jong-Ho Kim, Dr. Jangkyu Kim, Prof. Jungho Hwang, Dr. Young-Ok Park, Dr. Hyun-Seol Park and Dr. Kyung-Ju Choi (a course coordinator). Pansori (a Korean musical genre of storytelling performed by a singer and a drummer) performance during the welcome reception added excitement to the conference attendees.

1st Domestic Conference

KFS’s 1st Domestic Conference was held at Hanbat University, Daejeon, Korea, August August 28, 2018. It was a successful conference with total attendees of 48. There were two plenary speakers (Prof. Jun-Hyung Cho, Prof. Jin Chul Joo), 5 keynote speakers (Drs. Bangwoo Han, Jong-Kil Kim, Kwang Chul Noh, Yeong-Og Choi, K-J Choi), and 12 speakers including Prof. Kang-Ho Ahn and Prof. Joo-Hong Choi. This conference was sponsored by the Institute of Environmental Preservation & Disaster Prevention of Hanbat National University.

2nd International Conference

KFS’s 2nd International Conference was held at Hanbat University, Daejeon, Korea, on February 26, 2019. This conference was sponsored by the Regional Innovation Center for Industrialization of Advanced Chemical Materials, Hanbat National University. Total participants were 32. Plenary speaker was Professor Emeritus, Chung-Hak Lee, Seoul National University. There were 4 keynote speakers (Dr. Tao Zhang, Director of Gas Turbine Research Institute in China, Professor Feng Xin, China Academy of Building Research, Dr. Khuong Trung Thuy,CEO of Oriental Oil & Gas Joint Stock Co., Vietnam and Dr. K-J Choi, Clean & Science USA) and 5 invited speakers (VP Emily Chiu, Taiwan Passal Co., Professor Joo-Hong Choi, Gyeongsang National University, Professor Suk-Ho Kang, Yeungnam University, Professor Seung Han Woo, Hanbat National University and Dr. Jong-Kil Kim, AM Nanotech / Hanyang University).

2nd Domestic Conference

KFS’s 2nd Domestic Conference was held at Hanbat University, Daejeon, Korea, on August 27, 2019. This conference was sponsored by the Regional Innovation Center for Industrialization of Advanced Chemical Materials, Hanbat National University. 38 people participated. Plenary speaker was Professor Jin-Do Chung, Hoseo University. There were 2 keynote speakers (Dr. Bangwoo Han, Korea Institute of Machinery and Materials and Dr. K-J Choi, Clean & Science USA), 7 invited speakers (Professor Suk-Ho Kang, Yeungnam University, Professor Seung Han Woo, Hanbat National University, Dr. Seok-Kyun Song, Cheorwon Plasma Research Institute, VP Gi Teak Park, BKT Co., R&D Director Gi Young Kim, 3AC, Director Jin-Hoi Gu, DY INDUS and Dr. Jong-Kil Kim, AM Nanotech / Hanyang University), and 6 short (10 minutes each) presentations from the Korea Institute of Machinery and Materials.

5th Conference – 2020 Virtual Conference

KFS had planned to have 3rd International Conference on February 17 and 18, 2020 at Hanbat National University, Daejeon, Korea. However, this conference was cancelled due to COVID-19. Instead, the steering committee of KFS decided to have 5th Conference – 2020 Virtual Conference, September 21 through October 8, 2020 for three weeks. Participants of each Zoom lecture varied from 3 to 12 due mainly to Korean Thanksgiving Holidays (Chuseok). There were 8 keynote speakers; three from USA, two from Korea, one from Canada, one from Germany and one from Beijing China. The highlight of keynote lecture was given by Professor Kihong Park with GIST on Characterization of Physical, Chemical, and Toxicological Properties of Fine Particles in the Ambient Atmosphere. Here are topics of each speaker: Professor Donghyun Rim with Pennsylvania State University, USA on Modeling of Indoor Chemistry and Dynamics, Dr. Divine Damertey Sewu with Hanbat National University, Korea on Application of Biochar Adsorbent for Wastewater Treatment, KFS chair Dr. Kyung-Ju Choi with Clean & Science, Rolling Meadows, USA on How Face Masks Help Stop COVID-19, Professor Eunkyoung Shim with North Carolina State University, USA on Fluorochemical melt additive migration and charge protection in electret air filtration materials, Dr. Martin Lehmann with MANN+HUMMEL, Germany on Filtration Solutions for Clean Mobility, Professor Jinying Xi with Tsinghua University. Beijing, China on Application of Biotechniques in Industrial Waste Gas Treatment: the Experience in China and Dr. Chang-Seo Lee with Concordia University, Montreal Quebec, Canada on Performance of Electronic Air Cleaning Technologies for VOC removal.

6th Conference - 2021 Virtual Conference

The steering committee of KFS decided to have 6th Conference – 2021 Virtual Conference, November 14 through 24, 2021 for free. Anyone who was interested in KFS activities could participate in the 2021 KFS Virtual Conference at no charge. The theme of the conference was “COVID-19 and Filtration”. Participants of each Zoom lecture were about 15. There were 7 keynote speakers from USA and Korea. The name and title of each lecturer were 1) KFS chair Dr. Kyung-Ju Choi with Clean & Science on COVID-19 and Filtration, 2) Dr. Divine D. Sewu and Professor Seung Han Woo with Hanbat National University and Life Green Technology Company on Physicochemical and adsorption property alterations of magnetic biochar produced with α-FeOOH on terrestrial and marine biomass feedstock, 3) Professor Jun-Hyung Cho with Kangwon National University on Development of Eco-friendly Wood Filter using Waste Forest Resources, 4) Randy Cooper, Vice President of the Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers (AHAM) on Standard Development Activities in North America Associated with Device Capabilities to Mitigate Potential Health Risks, 5) Kathleen Owen, ASHRAE Fellow on Air Filtration in Response to COVID19, 6) Dr. Thad Ptak, well-known air filtration expert on Residential Air Filtration for Controlling Bioaerosols, 7) Chris Muller, ASHRAE Distinguished Lecturer on Filtration Technologies for Fresh Air Units & Room Air Purifiers: Standards and Testing are Necessary Requirements for IAQ and Health.

7th Conference – 2022 Virtual Conference

The steering committee of KFS decided to repeat 7th Conference – 2022 Virtual Conference, November 7 through 21, 2022 for free. Anyone who was interested in KFS activities could participate in the 2022 KFS Virtual Conference at no charge. There were 6 speakers from USA and Europe. The name and title of each lecturer were 1) KFS chair Dr. Kyung-Ju Choi with Clean & Science on electret filer media manufacturing methods, 2) Professor Daren Chen with Virginia Commonwealth University on study on the reverse pulsed-flow cleaning for pleated filter cartridge, 3) Dr. Alain Ginestet with CETIAT France on design improvement of an injection pipe and its validation on the performances of a semi-industrial pulse-jet, 4) Manfred Sauer-Kunze with Camfil Germany on newly published ISO 10121-3, testing and classification of gas phase air cleaning devices, 5) Martin Klein with MANN+HUMMEL, Germany on filtration products for new energy vehicles, 6) Professor Eunkyoung Shim with North Carolina State University on fabrication of PLA filter media via meltblowing process and their filtration performance.

8th Conference – 2023 Virtual Conference

The steering committee of the Korean Filtration and Separation Society (KFS) was delighted to announce that there was no registration fee for 2023 KFS Virtual Conference, November 13 – 22, 2023. Anyone who was interested in KFS activities could participate in the 2023 KFS Virtual Conference at no charge. There were 5 speakers from USA (2), China (2) and Korea (1). 9th Conference – 2024 In Person Conference

The steering committee of the Korean Filtration and Separation Society (KFS) is delighted to announce the 9th Conference (in person meeting) on 11/5/24 at International Convention Center in Jeonbuk National University in South Korea. This year's conference focuses on Filtration Back to Basics workshop conference educating students about Filtration. There were 5 presenters and 15 attendees. The presentation title and name of five speakers were: 1) Particulate Air Filtration, by Dr. Kyung-Ju Choi, Overview of Solid-Liquid Separation Process Technology and Automatic Coastal Erosion Restoration Technology Using Sediment Settling Process by Prof. Jong-Kil Kim, Basic Information on Chemical Filters in Air Filtration Application by Gyeongju Seo, Airborne Microorganism Antibacterial/Antiviral Hybrid Filter Technology and Evaluation Method to Prevent Indoor Air Quality Infections by Dr. Sang-gu Lee, and Understanding the Wavelengths of UV and the UV Dosage Required for 99.9% Destruction Various Organisms Study on Anti-Electrostatic Properties of Filter Material, by KwanSoo Ha.

Basic Air and Liquid Filtration Virtual Courses were offered on April 28 through May 6, 2021. There were 11 participants on Air Basic Course. Liquid Basic Course was canceled due to not enough registrants.

Instructor: Professor Jun-Hyung Cho
Jun-Hyung Cho is a professor in the Department of Paper Science & Engineering at Kangwon National University in Republic of Korea. He received his Master degree in Engineering and Ph.D. degree in Chemical Engineering from Nagoya University in Japan from 1984 to 1989. His research and consulting interests are in the area of Filtration system of Papermaking wastewater, pigment for Papermaking and Environment-friendly Material. He is currently Vice President for Foreign Cooperation of Kangwon National University.

KFS Booth was set up by Professor Suk-Ho Kang and KFS Chair Kyung-Ju Choi who was a Keynote Speaker and a Session Chair at FILTECH 2018 in Cologne, Germany, March 13 – 15, 2018. KFS Chair, Kyung-Ju Choi has been a scientific committee member of FILTECH. Booth Number: U16, Name: Korean Filtration and Separation Society, Description: Korean Filtration and Separation Society (KFS) is an association promoting the education and training of scientists, engineers, and industry individuals on filtration and separation technologies. KFS was founded in 2017 to fulfill theneed in Korea for a professional society advancing the development of novel filtration and separation technologies and creating a forum for the collaboration of international experts from academia, industry, and government agencies.
Fiber Society Conference Participation
2) KFS Chair and Vice Chair participated in The Fiber Society’s Spring 2018 Conference at Tower Hall Funabori, Tokyo, Japan, June 12- 14, 2018. Dr. Kyung-Ju Choi presented a paper along with promoting KFS activities as KFS Chair, and Vice Chair Jong-Kil Kim attended.

History

Dr. Kyung-Ju Choi has enthusiastically pursued of the support of the International Delegates of Filtration (INDEFI) in order to host 14th World Filtration Congress (WFG) in South Korea in 2024. Dr. K-J Choi, Dr. H-S Park, Prof. S-H Kang and Prof. Kwang-Ho Choo met at Kyungpook National University on May 21, 2016 and discussed about a possible organization that could handle the proposal. Drs. Kyung-Ju Choi and Jong-Kil Kim met on June 12, 2017 in Seoul and decided to organize the Korean Filtration and Separation Society due to critical needs of filtration and separation in Korea. The organizing committee was formed on September 4, 2017. They are Dr. Kim, Jong-Kil (Hanyang University), Dr. Park, Hyun-Seol (Korea Institute of Energy Research), Dr. Park, Young-Ok (Korea Institute of Energy Research), Prof. Kim, Jong-Ho (Chonnam National University), Dr. Kim, Jang-Kyu (BKT), Prof. Kang, Suk-Ho (Yeungnam University) and Dr. Choi, Kyung-Ju (Clean & Science) as an acting chair. Dr. Kyung-Ju Choi was elected as Chairman of KFS at the general meeting on November 15, 2017.
